Bleecker Street has set World War II drama “Anthropoid,” starring Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy, for an Aug. 12 release in the U.S.

The distributor made the announcement on Friday, the 74th anniversary of the mission “Operation Anthropoid” on May 27, 1942.

Bleecker Street acquired U.S. rights to the drama two weeks ago from LD Entertainment during the Cannes Film Festival. The movie is based on “Operation Anthropoid,” the code name for the Czech operatives’ mission to assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich.

Heydrich, the main architect behind Adolf Hitler’s Final Solution, was the Reich’s third in command behind Hitler and Heinrich Himmler. He was also the leader of Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia.

The film follows two soldiers from the Czech army-in-exile, Josef Gabčík (Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Dornan), who are parachuted into their occupied homeland in December of 1941. They must find a way to assassinate Heydrich, with limited intelligence and little equipment in a city under lockdown.

“Anthropoid” will open the Karlovy Vary Film Festival on July 1.
