Today Jamie attended the launch of NIPanC in Belfast’s Mater Hospital alongside his dad Professor Jim Dornan and his sister Jess. Afterwards, he took part in some interviews for UTV and Newsline, with the UTV interview available to watch here. He talks about how some 20 years later, his mums death still has an affect on him in his day to day life.

He described Lorna as “very glamorous” and said she would have especially loved the aspects of his job that he hates. “My mum was a very glamorous person and probably would have liked that side of things,” he said.

“I would have been able to take her to LA, and go to premieres and that sort of stuff – it’s all the stuff I hate about the job funnily enough. The stuff I can’t stand but my mum would have loved it. She would have been very tickled by the fact I make a career out of this weird thing that I do.”

“Hopefully there is some world where she has an awareness of it.”

The charity is being set up in partnership with two national charities, Pancreatic Cancer Action (PCA) and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund (PCRF), with the new group focusing on Northern Ireland. It aims to provide an awareness of the symptoms caused by Pancreatic Cancer to enable early diagnosis, whilst also supporting those diagnosed and their families. During one of the interviews, Jamie talked about how bleak the outlook was for those diagnosed even with the advanced medical treatment and knowledge, how the statistics of survival are still critically low, making it all the more important that it is caught quickly.

I’m sure you will have all read that yesterday it was announced that Jamie was to step down as Patron of Tiny Life to persue personal charitable endeavours. During the launch, Jim was announced as the President of the new charity and Jamie as their Patron. I for one am really proud he is supporting a charity that is so close to his and his families hearts after years of dedicating his time to fundraising for premature babies born in Northern Ireland
