Jamie Dornan was in lockdown with his family when he received a fan letter that was more than a little creepy. The star of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movies was sent “a collage of photographs of a kid,” with a note about his most famous role. “Someone saying that it was my kid, and my wife should know that I have this kid who’s 7 years old,” Dornan, 38, says over a Zoom call. He squints to absorb the weirdness of this allegation. “I think they were trying to say that the kid was mine and Dakota Johnson’s, and we’d had this baby while we made the first ‘Fifty Shades’ movie,” Dornan says. “It piqued our interest, let’s say. It was a bit freaky.”

Dornan learned all about freaky things when he suited up as Christian Grey, the sexually adventurous businessman based on the E.L. James books that became a cultural phenomenon. The first “Fifty Shades of Grey” film, released in 2015, catapulted Dornan from a character actor (best known for the BBC TV series “The Fall,” in which he played a serial killer) into a movie star. Next came two sequels, which concluded in 2018 with the cheesy “Fifty Shades Freed,” set in the newlywed days of Christian and Anastasia’s relationship. The snarky reviews didn’t keep fans from flocking to theaters: Overall, the trilogy grossed a whopping $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office for Universal Pictures.

Since then, Dornan has pivoted. Outside of a supporting turn in 2018’s “Robin Hood,”the Irish actor hasn’t gravitated toward studio material. “I love the energy of independent film,” Dornan says. “I love that sort of kick, frolic, scramble-to-the-finish-line every day, and you can take liberties and everyone’s in it together.” He especially appreciates the camaraderie with the crew on a small set. “No one’s getting paid what they have been paid, and we have to make this work,” he says. “It brings out the best in people.”

The Irish actor has a lot to say about his new fragrance campaign, and even more to say on the pandemic—find the whole scoop here.
It all begins in 2015: The BOSS The Scent collection by Hugo Boss is launched, followed shortly by the more feminine BOSS The Scent For Her in 2016. From there, further editions of the collection are added. However, our story starts in 2018. The launch of the Boss The Scent Private Accord was punctuated with a killer campaign featuring Jamie Dornan, the star of the 50 Shades of Grey franchise and Dutch model Birgit Kos—the perfect faces to capture the magic and allure of the collection.
Two years on, the magic continues with BOSS The Scent Absolute. Released in September of 2019, just before the pandemic settled in full force, this chapter of BOSS The Scent is the most intense to date.
The olfactory embodiment of both attraction and mystery, this latest his-and-hers pairing is the most intimate and most intoxicating yet. To learn more about the new campaign and delve a little deeper into Dornan’s reprisal as the face of BOSS The Scent, we sat him down for a quick chat.
Ahead, find his take on the BOSS fragrance family, sensuality and navigating the tumultuous pandemic.

Can you tell us your favourite thing about the BOSS The Scent fragrances?
The smell? (laughs) I’m sorry, that was a joke. I love the message behind the fragrance. When I wear it I feel confident, self-assured, masculine and sophisticated. You know, most things that you’d want from a fragrance; something that makes you feel like a heightened version of yourself. I feel that the BOSS The Scent fragrances give you exactly those feelings.

BOSS The Scent fragrances are deeply inspired by the art of seduction—what does sensuality mean to you?
It’s sort of a personal thing, sensuality. It means different things to different people, but I think sensuality is like a magnetism and a willingness to go somewhere with someone but still feel warm and comforted. That’s my version of sensuality— wanting to be in a seductive place with someone, yet still feel safe there. At least, that’s my vague way of summing that up.

Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan let the sparks fly in their first movie together, Wild Mountain Thyme.

The Ireland-set romantic drama from John Patrick Shanley, the Oscar-winning writer of Moonstruck, showcases the pair’s crackling chemistry, which was on full display when they spoke with PEOPLE about the project, out this December.

In Wild Mountain Thyme, Blunt, 37, plays Rosemary Muldoon, a headstrong farmer with a yearning for her neighbor, Anthony Reilly (Dornan, 38). Unfortunately for Rosemary, he is completely oblivious to her feelings for him. With his father (Christopher Walken) working to sell the family farm to his American nephew (Jon Hamm), Anthony is inspired to pursue his dreams — and perhaps a romance with Rosemary.

The film is based on Shanley’s own hit Broadway play Outside Mullingar, which received a 2014 Tony Award nomination for best play and starred Debra Messing in her Broadway debut as Rosemary.

In a PEOPLE exclusive first look at the romance, Blunt and Dornan discuss their love for Shanley’s screenplay, mastering region-specific Irish accents and taking a break from blockbusters to tell a more intimate story.

PEOPLE: How are you two?

Emily Blunt: We’re doing great. Jamie was just asking the question of… He literally was talking about what is nude these days and I was like, what do you mean? Is half nude considered nude? And then he got cut off by this really interesting fact he was about to tell me. These are the kind of conversations we seem to have. Pretty exciting.

PEOPLE: Jamie has a lot of experience with nudity, so.

Jamie Dornan: Oh, yeah.

Blunt: I have never seen him in those films. I only know him as the awkward and strange Anthony from Wild Mountain Thyme. I have never seen these films that you speak of.

Dornan: If you play your cards right, you’ll be getting them for Christmas.

PEOPLE: Well, why don’t we kick it off just with the chemistry you two obviously have? You two have good banter and you seem to be pretty friendly with one another. What was it like acting alongside each other and did you hit it off right from the start?

Dornan: So in my mind, Emily and I have met a couple of times before. I felt like we had connected in quite a strong way before and other real sort of meeting of minds, mutual respect. And then we arranged to have dinner. Emily’s sister and my wife are very close friends, and we arranged to have this dinner when we knew we were doing this job together. And Emily acted like, and actually said, that she’d never met me before.
